Srimad Bhagwat Gita in Punjabi (in Devanagari Script) was translated by Pandit Ram Saran Advocate a resident of Lahore (Un-divided India). He was a practicing Lawyer in the High Court and lived in Anarkali Bazar. He was an advocate of the revolutionaries.

My mother was his second youngest daughter. I had heard from my mother that he was an avid writer and had written a few books besides translating Srimad Bhagwat Gita in Gurmukhi. The Gita was included as a text in the Punjabi syllabus of Punjab University, Lahore (Un-divided India). Only one of his works – Srimad Bhagwat Gita (Translated in Gurmukhi in Devanagari Script) – was with his two eldest daughters. His remaining works were left in Lahore during partition.

Pandit Ram Saran ji expired before independence in 1946. His family consisting of his wife, two sons and two younger daughters – including my mother – came to Delhi after partition.

Some literary works of Pandit Ram Saran Ji:

• Shrimad Bhagavad Gita (1935) – Pandit Ram Saran Ji translated Shrimad Bhagwat Gita in verses in Punjabi Language and published in both Devanagari and Gurmukhi scripts. I and my cousin have published it again in 2020 so that people get a chance to read this masterpiece and popular work. A copy of the translation and manuscript of Panditji’s Srimad Bhagavad Gita was available with his daughter Mrs Krishna which is now with her daughter Dr Neera Sharma.
• Punjab De Geet (1931) – Pandit Ram Saran Ji made a valuable contribution to Punjabi literature by collecting and publishing a collection of Punjabi folk songs, ‘Punjab De Geet’ (1931) in Shahmukhi and Gurmukhi in Lahore. This is amongst the first works on folk songs in Punjabi Literature. Almost all books on Punjabi Literature cite this book. This book is under publication.
• Poems – Many poems written by Pandit Ji were published in the magazines like ‘Preet Ladi’ and ‘Phulwari’. Some poems I could find include – ‘Qurbani da Aakhri Din’, ‘Raat’, ‘Teri-Meri Preet Purani’ and ‘Haq Nu Khalkat Bhool Gayi Ai’.
• Vedic Sandhya – Pandit Ram Saran Ji translated ‘Vedic Sandhya’ into simple Hindi (poetry).
• Shara Baint Shah Muhamad – A research publication that was appreciated by the people.
• Sapt Padi – Pandit Ram Saran Ji translated ‘Sapt Padi’ into simple Hindi verses.
